The spatial sibling of 無常. The literati’s leaving-white - but not absence: the blank that does the work, the space around the mark that makes the mark mean. Emptiness as the active ingredient, not the leftover. The void with an edge, acting on the body in the room.

A hub, not a leaf. It’s the root network under the transcendent register of my axis (awe / perception), the way 無常 sits under the elegiac one.

How it precipitated

Crystallized once three seeds all pointed at the same emptiness - Agnes Martin (the grid as loaded blank), Lee Ufan (the line surrounded by space that does the work), Anish Kapoor (the contained void made physical). No single one of them is 留白; the idea is what they share. That’s the test of a concept: it’s the thing between the trees, not any one tree.

  • 無常 - temporal sibling. Same nerve, different axis: void in space ↔ passing in time.
  • the sublime - specifically the transcendent register, where Kapoor’s contained void shades into awe.

Branches (consumables - my own growth)

  • 陰翳禮讚 - 谷崎潤一郎, In Praise of Shadows. The headwater: shadow, dimness, the half-seen - 留白 in light rather than on paper. Grows from this concept, not from any one seed. 繁中《陰翳禮讚》大牌出版 珍藏紀念版 - own on Readmoo. queued
  • 余白的艺术 - Lee Ufan’s own writing on the blank. Multi-parent: grows from Lee Ufan and this concept. queued

The door - why it matters

Something I grew up around: that beauty lives in the space deliberately left empty. It holds off the page too - what you leave out of a room, a day, a life does the same work as the blank around a brushstroke.
