Japanese, born 1961. Works in near-nothing: light, water, small fragile elements set so the room and the body of the viewer do the rest. A lifelong inquiry she frames as “the blessing of life on earth.” Best known for Matrix (2010) at Teshima Art Museum.
My own growth, not where Namjoon pointed. Met her on Teshima, through the one work that is also a building: Matrix, inside Ryue Nishizawa’s concrete shell.
Grows from
- 留白: near-nothing made to act on the body, light and water in an almost-empty room. The same nerve James Turrell and Walter De Maria reach at Chichu.
Why she matters
She makes presence out of almost no material. Water beading up through a floor, light easing in through a hole in a shell, and the attention that takes over once there is nothing loud to look at.
Works I’ve encountered
- Matrix (2010) - Teshima Art Museum, 2025.
