American, 1928-2011. Spent most of his career in Italy. Gestural mark-making, layered scrawl, calligraphic surfaces, Mediterranean atmospheres. Often grouped with Abstract Expressionism but stayed apart from its rhetoric.
A convergence seed, parallel to Mark Rothko. I met him at the Tate Modern Twombly room before I knew Namjoon had pointed too; his finger and mine arrived at the same place separately.
Provenance - where he pointed
Pointed at by Namjoon.

@menilcollection IG post confirmed Namjoon’s visit. Namjoon’s December 2021 Houston art tour included the Cy Twombly Gallery at the Menil Collection (the dedicated Twombly building) Same Houston trip that seeded Mark Rothko
Why it matters - the door
I knew Twombly before knowing Namjoon pointed at him. The Tate Modern Twombly room landed strongly on me first, on my own; only later did I see Namjoon’s references and recognize the convergence. I was already in that room. He confirmed; he didn’t open.
Origin: convergence (not doorway)
Like Mark Rothko: my eye and his arrived independently. Still a seed (the type is set by Namjoon’s pointer, not by who arrived first), logged as convergence so the door tells the true story.
Grows into
- 留白 - the loaded surface; the calligraphic mark made and half-erased, the field that holds what isn’t fully there.
- the sublime - transcendent register, lyrical mode.
Branches
- Tate Modern - where I met him substantively. Encountered.
- Cy Twombly Gallery, Menil - the Houston dedicated-building. Queued (same Houston pilgrimage as a Mark Rothko / Rothko Chapel return).
Related seeds
- Mark Rothko - parallel convergence. Same generation, same Houston connection (the Menil houses both the Rothko Chapel area and the Cy Twombly Gallery).
- Agnes Martin - transcendent register sibling.
