Hannam-dong, Seoul. Samsung family’s private collection, opened 2004, reopened 2021 after renovation. Three buildings by three architects: Mario Botta, Jean Nouvel, and Rem Koolhaas. Traditional Korean art (celadon, Joseon, Buddhist) and contemporary art under one campus.

Provenance - where he pointed

Pointed at by Namjoon - provisional. Convergence, not doorway.

I first visited in May 2022. The pull came from somewhere in Namjoon’s orbit but I can’t pin where - no @rkive post, Live, or interview I can locate predates May 2022 for Leeum. The earliest reference I have surfaced is from 2023 (post-visit). So strictly: this is a convergence seed, parallel to Mark Rothko - I was already there, his pointer (when found) confirmed rather than opened.

Citation pending. Two paths forward:

  • Find the pre-May-2022 source. If it exists, this stays a doorway-seed and the timeline tightens.
  • Cite the 2023 reference as the confirming source. The note stays origin: convergence and the door tells the truth.

If no source ever surfaces, demote to Branch without guilt (Garden Rules: don’t reverse-engineer provenance).

Why it matters - the door

The way in was a show, not the building. My first visit (May 2022) was for 현대미술 소장품 M2, and two of its three rooms left a mark: Black, Blank and Strange Planet. The museum opened for me through what hung inside it before the architecture did its own work.

(still to deepen: which of the Botta / Nouvel / Koolhaas buildings held me as a single campus.)

Grows into

  • 留白 - the transcendent register, on Korean ground.

Branches

  • Contemporary Art Collection M2 - 현대미술 소장품 M2, Oct 8 2021 to July 20 2022. The show I walked into on my first visit (May 2022); the one that opened the museum for me. Works I captured there are listed on that page (Serra’s Esna, Song Su-nam’s Meditation (I), Kapoor’s mirror pieces).

Works I’ve captured in the museum (beyond the M2 show)

From the rest of the campus, room or show still to pin.

  • Anish Kapoor - Sky Mirror, outdoors. Likely a permanent display (its twin Double Vertigo was inside the M2 show).
  • 吉岡徳仁 - Water Block, the cast-glass bench. A permanent fixture, not the M2 rotation.
  • Museum SAN - sibling architectural pilgrimage in Korea (Ando vs. Botta/Nouvel/Koolhaas).
  • Mark Rothko - convergence-pattern sibling. Known pre-pointer, confirmed after.

TODO

  • Find the pre-May-2022 Namjoon Leeum reference. Search @rkive Stories archive, Weverse, Live transcripts.
  • Pin the 2023 reference (whichever post / Live / interview) and cite it inline above.
