Korean, born 1932. Pioneer of Korean experimental art (실험미술). “Non-sculpture”: tied and bound objects, knots in stone, smoke and wind and fire as material. Predates and runs parallel to Mono-ha across the strait.
Provenance
Pointed at by Namjoon.
Namjoon archived Lee Seung-taek: (Un)Bound at Gallery Hyundai (Seoul), 2022, on Instagram (the post since deleted, archived by fans). A solo of his, the finger landing on the artist himself. Source: https://www.instagram.com/p/CeDU13cvpIG/ (archived/deleted)
origin: convergence. I walked into (Un)Bound on my own gallery crawl in 2022, not knowing Namjoon had pointed at the same show. He confirmed the door rather than opened it, like Mark Rothko and Kohei Nawa.
Why it matters
The way he plays with different materials. Rocks are supposed to be hard and stiff, but yet in his work it’s malleable by a string that is soft.
Branches
- Godret Stone (encountered) - stone bound under rope, matter put under tension.
- (Un)Bound (encountered) - the show, Gallery Hyundai, 2022.
Related seeds
- Lee Ufan - Mono-ha kin across the strait.
- Sekine Nobuo - Mono-ha.
- Mono-ha - the movement he runs parallel to (my own reading).
