Colors of Yoo Youngkuk (Kukje)

Yoo Youngkuk (1916–2002) painted the mountain until it became pure color and geometry: triangles of vermilion and cobalt, a sun cut to a flat disc, peaks pressed into planes that float on green and blue. “Colors of Yoo Youngkuk” hung these across Kukje Gallery, Seoul, 9 June to 21 August 2022. I walked into it on a day of galleries in the Samcheong cluster, not knowing it was also a show Namjoon had marked.

Grows from

Grows from Yoo Youngkuk and shows at Kukje Gallery. A convergence: my own crawl walked me into the room, and his pointer was already on it (the Kukje 2022 show he archived).

Why it matters

(fill in: the door, what the color-mountains did standing in front of them.)

Works encountered

My photographs from the rooms, the signed paintings (“Youngkuk” + year) among them.
