2000, Richard Serra

A torqued spiral of weatherproof steel, walls leaning in and out as the passage winds toward an open center. Richard Serra’s 2000 stands in Dia Beacon’s former train shed with three Torqued Ellipses (1996–97): Torqued Ellipse I, Torqued Ellipse II and Double Torqued Ellipse, with Union of the Torus and the Sphere nearby.

Serra never landed before, DC and Seattle both flat. Four works on the warehouse floor compounded into something gigantic, like nature’s grandness, and I feared it. Inside the spiral, the moving walls made me feel enclosed and trapped, not knowing what was ahead scared me, and I turned back before the center.

I wanted to push through but the fear was too much. Two visitors on my return path, I followed them to the center. The center was so pretty, light shining onto the walls, the openness in it. Later I went back in alone, still felt the tension on the way in, felt rewarded in the center.

Grows from

Grows from Richard Serra, a seed. This is the gallery Namjoon moved through in Indigo Live at Dia Beacon; Dia’s tour of the video (Namjoon at Dia Beacon) names the Torqued Ellipses and 2000.
