Self, Marc Quinn

Marc Quinn’s white-marble figures fill a brick vault of the Arario basement; in a refrigerated vitrine nearby sits Self (2001), his own head cast in 4.5 litres of his frozen blood, the exact volume a body holds. British, b. 1964, one of the YBAs. The head only exists while the power stays on, and he recasts it every few years, so the work is a portrait kept alive by refrigeration.

Grows from

My own looking, not where Namjoon pointed.

  • 無常 - a self-portrait that decays the instant it thaws, mortality held off by a plug in the wall. Impermanence made literal.

First seen

Cover: the marble figures in the same room. The blood head itself I caught only on its wall label, not cleanly in frame.
