South African, born 1904 in Johannesburg, died 2002 in Clamart, France. Left South Africa in 1938 over the growing segregation, painted in Paris and Denmark, and was the only African member of CoBrA; his work carried the Bantu idea of Ubuntu, that “Man is One.”
