Antibes, The Pink Cloud, Paul Signac

A single pink cloud over the bay of Antibes, built dot by dot. Signac wrote a friend in 1916 naming the cloud’s “personalities”: a vaporous Loïe Fuller at the upper left, “Michelangelesque figures” in the dark underside at right, and German gunboats in the corner he called “the black squadron.” Paul Signac, French, 1863-1935. Oil on canvas.
